DISCRIPTION/OBJECTIVES
-
A survey of the study of clothing from ancient time to present day, and
its application to
costume design.
-
The course will develop an awareness of the evolution of dress as well
as the individual garment characteristics of each period.
-
The culture and history of the period will also be briefly reviewed.
REQUIREMENTS
CLASS FORMAT
-
Slides lectures and discussions will supplement textbook reading.
-
There will be some viewing of actually period garments and various period
costumes.
-
All of these will be included on tests.

Costume History Analysis of a viewed film--1000 words or 4 pages (100)

Class Participation: Tardiness, alertness, actively discussing when
applicable and class web page participation. (100)

GRADUATE PROJECTS
Costume MFA Students

Costume History Binder
-
For each period from Egyptian to Modern, develop a file of Xerox, free
hand drawing and tracing research which should include men's, women's and
children's clothing.
-
Also include information regarding the cut and construction for the period.
-
Other areas could include: military, servant attire, religious attire,
accessories and make-up and hair.
-
Completed file is due on April 21st (500)

Directing and MA Students

Costume History Script Research Binder
-
Choose a period play and get it approved. (January 20th)
-
The play should have characters that are in divergent classes such as wealthy
or nobles, servants, beggars and possibly someone in religious or
military attire.
-
Then research clothing of the period for a minimum of 10 characters from
the play. Use at least six different research sources. Both
Xerox (visual) and verbal (typed) information should be included.
-
The final result should be presented in a binder format.
-
Due April 23rd.

Two Research Presentations (500)
ABSENCES
-
Only TWO unexcused absences will be allowed. For each additional
absence, the final grade will be lowered by one/third--for example:
an A becomes an A-, A- becomes a B+
-
Students are expected to arrive promptly. Excessive tardiness will
be considered as an absence.
